Ceramifiable Cable Compounds

Conceptual visualization of insulation forming a ceramic-like barrier under fire exposure.

Insulation that forms a ceramic barrier under fire

Nova Polymer’s ceramifiable cable compound family offers an alternative to mica tape wrapping and silicone rubber insulation in selected fire alarm cable constructions. An engineered inorganic system forms a ceramic-like residue under heat exposure, helping maintain separation around the conductor.

Three separate grades

Thermoplastic

For processing without a subsequent crosslinking stage. Select the cable construction and extrusion window around the application.

Sioplas

For silane crosslinking with the appropriate catalyst system and controlled moisture curing after extrusion.

E-beam

For electron-beam crosslinking after extrusion, with irradiation dose and penetration matched to the cable geometry.

Fit the manufacturing route to the cable

Insulation is applied on standard cable extrusion equipment. Removing a separate mica wrapping stage can simplify production and remove a speed bottleneck. The crosslinkable grades still require their respective curing or irradiation stages. Actual speed and cost benefits depend on the selected grade, cable construction and production conditions.

Define the fire performance target

Qualification targets include FE insulation-integrity durations under the specified DIN VDE 0472-814 test conditions, including FE180, and EN 50200 PH30–PH120, including PH120. Other cable and installed-system standards must be selected according to the application. Final cable performance must be tested by the customer under actual application conditions.
